ACES-Academic Challenge in Engineering & Science (formerly W.Y.S.E.)

Academic Competition is an exciting competition made up of a team of fourteen students. Members compete in math, English, chemistry, biology, physics, computer science, and engineering graphics. Membership is determined by tryouts. There are regional, sectional and state competitions.

Auto Club

The Auto Club is a student organization. Meetings are held weekly in which students can further increase their knowledge/hands-on training by performing work on a project car.  The project for this year is to research, design, and build a eco-marathon vehicle.  All students are welcome to participate, though at least one auto class would be helpful.

Chess Team

Chess Team competes against other teams within the North Suburban Chess League. Members may also have the opportunity to compete at the IHSA State tournament. Recreational and competitive members are encouraged to join. The club meets on Wednesdays with most competitions on Fridays.

Debate Team 

The Niles West Debate team is excited to announce a virtual debate season for the 20/21 school year. Novices (beginning debaters) will meet via Zoom / Zoom breakout sessions on Mondays and Wednesdays at 2:50 PM. The first club session will be on Monday, August 31. Competitions for novice debaters start at the end of September. The debate team also has classes to support the debaters. If your son / daughter is interested in one of the classes, the Honors Debate class is for students who are new to debate and want to compete on the team. DECA

DECA is a competitive business club offered to anyone enrolled in a business education course.  Membership benefits include traveling to conferences in cities like Orlando and Anaheim.  Other benefits include competitions, cash rewards, scholarships and the opportunity to meet 160,000 other DECA members from all over the world.

Engineering Club a.k.a. Vex Robotics Club

The VEX Robotics Competition is the ultimate STEM activity for middle school and high school students. Each year, an engineering challenge is presented in the form of a game. Students, with guidance from their teachers and mentors, use the VEX Robotics Design System to build innovative robots designed to score the most points possible in qualification matches, elimination matches and Skills Challenges. In addition to having a great time and building amazing robots, through their participation in the VEX Robotics Competition and their work within their team, students will learn many academic and life skills.

ESports Team

The Niles West eSports team is a welcoming and diverse community of video gamers who engage in competitive group or individual gaming. Math Team

Do you enjoy the challenge of math? Are you interested in exploring math beyond the normal classroom activities? If so, Math Team is for you. Math Team is open to all students with a high interest in math. Club members compete in five North Suburban Math League contests and the regional and state contests sponsored by the Illinois Council of Teachers of Math.

Mock Trial

The Niles West Mock Trial team(s) competes in functional courtrooms in the Chicagoland area. Mock trials are set up and structured just like a real court, bound by similar rules. This can help the students to know exactly what role each of the different people in court (judges, lawyers, witnesses, etc.) do in the judicial system. The Niles West Mock Trial team also participates in the state competition held on the University of Illinois at Urbana – Champaign campus. New members are encouraged to attend a meeting during first semester to learn about the club.

The season runs late-August to mid-March.

Scholastic Bowl

Quickly!

The graph y = 5/x is a ________?Correct answers and the quick press of a buzzer are keys to success on our Scholastic Bowl teams, both Varsity and JV. Members compete in local, state, and national contests, which ask questions from all areas of the curriculum as well as from a few offbeat realms.Special functions/events: The 2010 JV Scholastic Bowl Team won third place in conference with an overall record of 8-3 and first place in the CSL Conference Tournament.  The combined Varsity and JV teams were fifth in the state of Illinois in the national AUK Tournament.

Science Olympiad

Science Olympiad team has been chosen each year since 1993.  It spends October through March preparing for regional competition in the areas of biology, earth science, chemistry, physics, and apparatus building. At all but one regional competition we qualified for state competition.  In 1999, we qualified for our 1st national competition and placed 8th in the nation!

Speech Team

Speech Team is open to all students interesting in improving and developing their public speaking skills. Not only do you learn how to perform a speech, but you learn how to better interpret material to a level of greater understanding.
